The history of ITIL; and now in Q1 in 2019 : ITIL V4

ITIL Basics – What is ITIL?

ITIL is the industry standard for ITSM best practices, focused on aligning the needs of the business with IT services. The current most recent version is ITIL V3 (aka ITIL 2011) which is published as a series of 5 core books:

  1. ITIL Service Strategy
  2. ITIL Service Design
  3. ITIL Service Transition
  4. ITIL Service Operation
  5. ITIL Continual Service Improvement
Although many have claimed “ITIL Is Dead” over the years, that couldn’t be further from the truth as ITIL continues to be the gold standard for ITSM best practices and interest in the topic has remained quite high globally.

Why ITIL V4?

ITIL processes and best practices have been a powerful tool for organizations to maintain and improve their service management for decades. Two of the biggest criticisms of ITIL, though, have been its relationship with the ITSM community and failure to keep up with recent trends in software development and IT operations. ITIL V4 addresses these by making this update community-driven and identifying Agile, DevOps, and Lean as key focus areas for integration with traditional ITIL best practices. Though not mentioned specifically yet (as far as this author can tell), it will be interesting to see if ITIL V4 suggests services management best practices in context of trends such as serverless, containers, microservices, and multi-cloud.
The core elements of ITIL V3 are expected to remain the same. The new version of ITIL V4 will simply include new material on integration with additional best practices.
In a separate blog post we’ve previously covered the differences between ITIL V2 and V3.

ITIL V4 Certification

As the ITIL core is remaining the same, AXELOS has indicated that all current ITIL Certificates will remain valid. If you are studying now for ITIL V3, don’t fret as what you are learning now will still be important but it may be wise to hold off on getting the certification until the new extended version is available. There will also be ways for existing ITIL V3 professionals to upgrade to V4.

ITIL 4 Release Date

According to announcements made by AXELOS, ITIL 4 is expected to launch in the first quarter of 2019 (between January and March 2019). The specific dates are yet to be announced by the company.

How to transition to ITIL 4

AXELOS has created recommended routes that allow candidates to transition over to ITIL 4 while still gaining the skills and knowledge needed to understand the core concepts of the updated guidance.

ITIL V3 Foundation

If a candidate has taken ITIL v3 Foundation, then the recommended approach is to take ITIL 4 Foundation in order to be able to transition to the new scheme.
There is a large amount of new material in ITIL 4 Foundation therefore a new single exam is required to assess end-learner’s knowledge of the new ITIL 4 Foundation guidance.
ITIL 4 Foundation is scheduled for release in Q1 2019.

ITIL V3 Intermediate (3 or 4 credits achieved)

End- learners holding a low number of credits beyond Foundation have two recommended options to transition to ITIL 4 dependent on what they want to achieve in the scheme.
OPTION 1: They are encouraged to take ITIL 4 Foundation and a further module in their preferred area of interest, becoming either an ITIL Specialist, Strategist or Leader.*
If a candidate has no intention of pursuing the ITIL Managing Professional designation, then the recommended route for these candidates would be to take the most relevant module in their area of practice/interest.
OPTION 2: They are encouraged to achieve 17 credits from ITIL v3 to become eligible to take the ITIL Managing Professional transition module.
If an end-learner would like to work towards achieving the ITIL Managing Professional designation and, they will need to continue collecting v3 credits until they have achieved the required 17 credits to be eligible to take the Managing Professional Transition module.
The benefit of this is that they are eligible to fast track past the v3 Managing Across the Lifecycle course and exam. They can also continue collecting credits before ITIL Managing Professional examinable modules are launched.
*further prerequisite required

ITIL Intermediate/Practitioner (6 or more credits achieved beyond Foundation)

If an end-learner has achieved 6 credits or more since v3 Foundation, then it is in their interest to continue collecting v3 credits to prepare them for an easy transition to ITIL 4 and gain the ITIL Managing Professional designation.
They will need to reach 17 credits to be eligible to take the ITIL Managing Professional Transition module.

ITIL v3 Expert

If a candidate has achieved ITIL v3 Expert, they can take the ITIL Managing Professional Transition module as soon as it is released to achieve the ITIL Managing Professional designation.
After achieving the ITIL Managing Professional designation, if the end-learner is interested in pursuing the ITIL Strategic Leader stream, they would only need to complete the ITIL Leader Digital & Strategy module.
Once they have completed both streams they are eligible to move towards ITIL Master.
